Swiss-Type Turning

Sliding-headstock machining for small, long and slender parts that ordinary turning cannot hold.

Take a part that is long relative to its diameter and put it on an ordinary lathe, and the material deflects away from the tool as it is cut. Chasing the tolerance makes it worse. Swiss-type machining turns the problem around: the bar slides forward through a guide bushing and the tools cut right at the bushing face, so there is almost no unsupported length to bend.

The result is that slender parts hold tolerance and surface finish that conventional turning simply cannot reach — and they hold it repeatably, part after part.

Where Swiss-Type Wins

Slender geometryLengths well beyond what a standard lathe can hold accurately.
Small diametersPrecision on small bores and fine features.
Surface finishLess deflection means fewer witness marks and a cleaner surface.
High volumeFast cycle times on small parts in production quantities.

Swiss-Type Capabilities

TypeSliding-headstock (guide-bushing) machining
Typical useLong, slender, small-diameter precision parts
ToleranceTight tolerance held on slender workpieces where conventional turning deflects
Common materialsBrass, stainless steel, aluminum, carbon steel
Typical partsPins, needles, slender shafts, connector contacts, miniature fittings
Aspect ratio is the trigger. If your part’s length is more than roughly 3–4 times its diameter and the tolerance is tight, Swiss-type is worth a quote even if you had planned on ordinary turning.

Swiss-Type — Common Questions

How do I know if my part needs Swiss-type?
A useful test is aspect ratio: the longer and thinner the part relative to its diameter, the stronger the case. As a rough guide, past 3–4:1 with a tight tolerance, it is worth quoting both ways.
Can you make small quantities this way?
Yes. The setup is comparable to other CNC processes, so prototypes and small batches are fine.
What materials can you run?
Brass, stainless steel, aluminum and carbon steel are routine. Tell us the grade and we will confirm before quoting.
